Museums at Night
Museums at Night (linked with the European event, La Nuit des Musées), is a nocturnal celebration of arts, history and heritage taking place over a weekend in May, when hundreds of museums and galleries across the UK open up after hours to host an array of special events.
Artists featured in this year’s events include contemporary taxidermist Polly Morgan, Magnum Photographer Martin Parr, and Legendary street artist Banksy.
Create were commissioned by leaders of Museums at Night, digital cultural publishing group Culture 24, to produce a series of images to promote the ‘out of hours’ festival. This year, they wanted a change of direction with their imagery, and enlisted our help to produce promotional material that would embody the ethos of the festival. We felt that it was vital to bring the magic of these special events alive, encapsulating the sense of imagination, excitement and wonder that accompanies them.
Drawing together historical details and references, the concept was to create a pop up book in which icons of history leapt from the open page. Featuring an already fantastic programme, the fact that the events are held at night brings an added element of excitement to the mix. We wanted to include suggestions of storytelling to highlight the feeling of anticipation and expectancy that comes with attending such unusual events in these magnificent spaces. It was important to highlight the diverse range of events and wide demographic the festival appeals to.
